The grand excuse (a poem)

I am really not this cynical, but sometimes you have to follow the thought to its conclusion…

The best of all possible worlds is a conceit
suggesting it is possible for us to know all possibilities
suggesting inevitability is open to defeat
suggesting defeat is reason to deny responsibility

Suggesting it is possible for us to know all possibilities
stretches even the most fertile mind beyond breaking
Suggesting defeat is reason to deny responsibility
casts impenetrable doubt on whichever choice we’re making

It stretches even the most fertile mind beyond breaking
to think that this is the best we can possibly do
casts impenetrable doubt on whichever choices we’re making
to suggest that this lack of imagination is something we should choose

To think that this is the best we can do
suggests inevitability is open to defeat
To suggest that this lack of imagination is something we should choose?
The best of all possible worlds is a conceit
