Beauty is in the eye of the beholder (a poem)

I wrote this as I was watching The Twilight Zone last night. (RIP, Donna Douglas.)

A face without expression
undefined
unclear
masked by sadness
restlessness
darkness and despair

As the mask is peeled away
vague shapes
diffuse light
until the truth is revealed
in all its ugliness
and all its beauty
