My first (a poem)

The May 10th prompt in The Daily Poet: Day-By-Day Prompts For Your Writing Practice, by Kelli Russell Agodon & Martha Silano, involves making a list of “firsts”, then writing a poem about one or more of them.

You were my first
the one I compared everyone else to

You were my first
the mistakes I became determined to avoid

You were my first
because I could no longer make mistakes

You were my first
the mistakes I was bound to repeat

You were my first
some mistakes weren’t built to last

You were my first
now you are my last
