Bookstore Poem #637

I have no idea what prompted this.

The recital

The more fanciful among the crowd
took to laughing—out loud this time

A threshold had been crossed
one there’d be no coming back from

The piano wire should have snapped
right there and then
for all the blood that rushed to his face

The clean, sudden slice
would have diverted the audience’s attention
from the insistent stream
of sweat surging down his cheek

He felt as though his feet were three times their normal size
and just as clumsy

Yes, he’d done it again—
he’d put on his clown shoes again by mistake
