Changes in the orchard (a poem)

There’s always that last moment of hope…

Silence absorbs the wash of colour
unconcerned with the voices
still chattering on below

Colour spreads like a perfume
undetectable at first
then you notice… something…

Skin tightens—hairs stand on end
mood stirs
eyes close

Deluge confronts anticipation
the winner takes all

Winter ghosts ravel into spring
ash-grey branches burst into green
beneath sunflower gold and sky blue

Open the windows
let the new beginning in
