Condition (a poem)

The conflation of a couple of things led to this…

The gloss, the veil—
whatever you want to call it—
has been removed

We have reverted to our raw state
before the film formed, accumulated
before we knew anything
before we had memory

The world as we know it
has not ended
but neither will it be the same

The past now jumps about
in unpredictable fashion
three weeks ago
may as well be this morning

The future may be 1975
we’re late for school
our Pee-Chees are missing
we’ve never heard of Cheap Trick
disco has never sucked

Now may may never be what we think it is
but only what we let happen

Right now, it’s almost time for Happy Days
