Bookstore Poem #539

Found a used copy of Wisława Szymborska’s View With a Grain of Sand at Third Place Books this afternoon. It had an inscription on the title page. Normally, I would pass up such a copy unless the inscription were by the author. But this one drew me in enough that I knew I had to buy it anyway. It also inspired this poem:

The inscription has lived
these last three weeks
on the shelves
with thousands of other
books for sale

It once was a dedication
now it must be viewed
with a grain of sand

Still the feeling pours
from the page

I will take it home with me
