Lemons and pears and indistinguishable landmarks (a poem)

I don’t know why I wrote that phrase on the sketch I did earlier this week, but I figured I ought to use it for something…

There’s an uncanny silence
unfolding right now in a space
some three thousand miles away

A bowl on the kitchen table
contains a couple of apples, three pears
and a lemon that will be thrown out
within the next couple of days

The dinner-table argument earlier in the evening
has been put out of mind
now that everyone in the house is asleep

Its shape lingers
just long enough to be shared as memories
on holidays to come

Sunrise is still a few hours away
the silence will wait
