Here (a poem)

Moving around sentence structures
pausing at the lexical and grammatical landmarks
that distinguish my world from others

I frequently find this place lacking
but I’m not willing to raze the landscape
because I’m jealous of more famous cities
with their ampersand bars
Wave cafés
and so-called hipster fashions

Here we allow sweatshirts and sandals
voices quiet but sincere
and a degree of architectural variety
provided it’s authentic
and amenable to modifications
once in a while

And when fall brings an Indian summer
we take out our notebooks
and write
