only now all I hear when you read is the ampersands (a poem)

Another day, another ampersand poet. Sigh…

You speak in full words and complete sentences
but the effect is the Far Side ‘Ginger’ panel
with ‘Ginger’ replaced by ‘&’:

blah blah blah blah & blah blah
& blah blah blah blah & blah blah
blah blah & blah

       I imagine a satchel somewhere
overflowing with ampersands

You desperately try to stanch the flow
before it becomes a deluge

but it has become too much
You have no choice but to toss back handfuls at a time
an invasive species, they get into everything:

hair, fabrics, cooking areas, play spaces
and poems

  1. This poem makes me think this is how people feel when I talk to them. I really love it, there is a certain rhytm to it, hard to pinpoint exactly.
