A reckoning of silence (a poem)

It’s almost too hot to write—but I took a breath, and, partly inspired by the painting I did today, this is what I got:

A forest of trees gathered here
stands in silence

No judgment
but what sticks to your clothing
or lives behind your eyes

An explorer trapped in the dunes
digs—frantic, panicked

A diver stranded at sea
tries not to fall asleep

Sand and sea are not vengeful
but neither are they forgiving

The trees have made their peace
now you must make yours
