Disco tendencies (a poem)

A bit sluggish today…

Eventually
it became the music
that dared not speak its name—
no longer ‘disco’
but ‘dance music’

It still had
disco tendencies
but its attitude
was totally new wave
and then hi-NRG

When the new crew
took over
it became all about
bass and beats
sampling bits of anything
and everything
the more obscure the better

Until, of course
the suits got greedy
and put up walls
around the art—
as if anyone could own
color or texture

You know, it’s harder
to speak the language
when you can’t use the words

You can hint around them
or draw the background
but a guess is a poor substitute
leading to misunderstandings
and angry messes

It’s too easy to put down
what you don’t understand
