The flavors of summer (a poem)

This is why I do these challenges. This is not the sort of thing I would normally write about…

Your favorite flavor
reminds me of childhood summers

Zesto’s hamburgers on Wednesday afternoons

Mrs. Brooks’ tuna-fish sandwiches

CreamSicles® from the ice-cream truck

Those Carnation® instant breakfast bars
with the slightly weird flavors
that never resembled the label

Fish-and-chips on Skipper’s® all-you-can-eat Tuesdays

All the flavors of Shasta®

Saltines and peanut butter in the afternoon
while watching The Joker’s Wild
from my favorite red rocking chair

Tang®—orange or grape—straight from the jar

The only sour notes
were carrots, asparagus, or Brussels sprouts
with an otherwise perfectly fine dinner

My protests were always met with
‘Try them—they’re good for you’

Instant coffee or Red Rose® tea in the evening
with two teaspoons of sugar
an attempt to stay awake long enough to watch Johnny Carson
and eradicate the lingering taste of asparagus…
