This is the perfect time
for the trees to come back
what we leave behind us
they will fill

so that we leave nothing behind
except what they need to grow
and the silence
the one we could never allow

Smoke does not rise under water
flames are not brave enough to follow
electrical sparks travel freely
but reveal only more clues, not answers

The genie’s lamp disappears
memory skips ahead
The siren’s eyes shut for the night
amidst bird calls and blood pools

The trees go silent
as though waiting for something
but they already have the silence
the one we could never allow
