Ch-ch-ch-changes (a realization)

It may come as little surprise to anyone who has followed this blog over the last several months (or longer) that the life of Kevin has remained in a state of flux.

As oblique as some of my references have been, one clear development has been that I have increasingly gravitated towards working with words—i.e., writing and editing: two collections of poetry published in 2014, another one in the making, and a possible non-poetry book in process. Additionally, nearly 100% of the minuscule income I have generated over the last eighteen months has come from copy editing.

Even so, I have surprised myself this week by proclaiming on two occasions that I am no longer particularly interested in doing graphic design for a living. On the one hand, it shouldn’t be a huge revelation, since my total lack of interest in web design/development has pretty much limited my job prospects from the get-go, and I have long found myself at odds with the graphic-design-as-corporate-marketing focus of the field—I also have zero interest in working for a huge agency or a large corporation (sorry, Microsquish and Amazon!). In addition, I have never been interested in ‘networking’; I understand the idea of establishing contacts in order to get work, but I find such a mercenary approach to be offensive, quite frankly. Still, I had hoped that the work I have done would help me to find similar work. Instead, on the few occasions when I have been seriously considered, I have been deemed to have either too little or too much experience.

So, there it is. While I won’t say that I am leaving graphic design behind completely, going forward, it is no longer my primary focus. I have more experience as an editor (going back to 1987), and am much better at editing than I am at design—at least, I have more confidence in my abilities as a copy editor.

I will soon be adding a Services page to my web site, where I will set out what I can offer, and what I will charge. It’s a start…
