The November 1st prompt in The Daily Poet: Day-By-Day Prompts For Your Writing Practice, by Kelli Russell Agodon & Martha Silano, is to ‘[w]rite a poem that includes visits from three saints.’ I went with a more general approach instead.
These days
it feels as though
the saints
have turned their backs
on me
I know
I don’t believe in them
but still
I’d hoped they’d look
after me
The holy blood of saints and sheep
has pooled and clotted
and caked and cracked
until it’s lighter than air
now adrift on the breeze
So when
it feels as though
the saints
have turned their backs
on me
I know
I don’t believe in them
but still
I hope they’ll change their minds
about me
