The May 7th prompt in The Daily Poet: Day-By-Day Prompts For Your Writing Practice, by Kelli Russell Agodon & Martha Silano, involves making a list of racehorse names, then incorporating them in a poem that is about anything other than racehorses.
The names I used:
Eclipse
Personal Ensign
Quintessence
Citation
Sunday Silence
Spectacular Bid
Northern Dancer
War Admirals
Orb
Middleground
Affirmed
Round Table
Lady’s Secret
Genuine Risk
The poem:
The state
of his personal ensign
eclipsed
his spectacular bid
for approval
from the
northern dancer
Her quintessence occupied
the middle ground
in the orb of his psyche
The citation
from the war admirals
he read in Sunday silence
could not displace it
He took a genuine risk
when he affirmed
his love for her
at the round table
But the lady’s secret
would not allow her
to acquiesce
