Putting out fires in my dreams now, apparently…

I put out a fire that makes no smoke
            generates no heat
                        has no flame

I am brave, and sweating with the effort
            as I look around
                        and wonder what I’m doing

This time
I don’t mind
not waking up
right away

I didn’t know the call was from you
            because it wasn’t
                        because you weren’t home

I am nearly asleep on my feet
            barely keeping my eyes open
                        seeing things I haven’t seen before

I can go to sleep now
            the calm of night has settled in here with me
                        the fires are outside
