Saint Kevin (a poem)

I’m reading Saint Genet, Jean-Paul Satre’s biography of Jean Genet—although calling it a ‘biography’ is a stretch. So far, it’s more of an existentialist analysis of Genet than anything.

I wrote
because I was a poet

I write
in order to be a poet

I become
the object others use
to condemn me
to their perceptions

I become
a futile gesture

Same as it ever was
