By the courthouse (a poem)

A late entry to end the month…

The letters etched on the back of that bench
are mighty creatures
staring down any eyes that dare meet them

They show steely resolve
their message sure and stubborn
they will not be worn down

not by time
not by weather
not by well-meaning municipal clean-up crews

And when the buses have stopped running
they will remain as marker, testament, and legacy
proof that some aspects of existence
do not die according to schedule or divine plan
or the fleeting distractions of the creature posing as man
