The Berger question (a poem)

Watching the movie version of Hair and remembering watching it one day on cable with my mom…

She said she thought
the Berger character
deserved what he got

Yes, he was impulsive
and irresponsible
and even ridiculous
but his heart was in the right place

And it didn’t make sense
that the drill sergeant didn’t notice
his missing soldier
or the awkward guy
who was there in his place—
or that Berger died in Vietnam
and was buried under his own name
rather than under Claude’s
(seeing as how the subterfuge went unnoticed)

But no, the joker got what he deserved

We still lost the war, you know
