Goodnight midnight, hello and hello (a poem)

Written in the wee hours after a long day.

I watched storm clouds
engulf the full moon
and didn’t do a thing to stop it

They devoured the moon whole
until light shot out from the edges
at which point a tree intervened
thrusting itself skyward
until the clouds spat the moon out whole

The wind and rain held their breath
waiting for nothing to happen—
but nothing never happens
nothing that I choose to believe
and I do and do not believe in nothing

I don’t know what that means
