There’s an old joke about Sartre arriving at the Pearly Gates… (a poem)

Starting out early today, thanks to a cancelled meeting.

If you removed every other pencil mark from the page
the leftover abstractions could spark
serious existential conflicts

These would be settled
only when the coin toss ended
with the quarter settled firmly on its edge

Any other result
short of a magician 3,000 miles away
retrieving the coin from behind the ear
of a distracted child
would obliterate the universe

Much to the relief of Jean-Paul Sartre
