I couldn’t throw out everything (a poem)

True story…

I emptied the medicine cabinet
cleaned out the pantry
took out all the recycling
and rearranged a few things

I wanted to get rid of
every little thing that might remind me
because I know you won’t be coming back
and that’s hard—maybe too hard

But I couldn’t bring myself
to throw out that last box
I got as far as putting it in the trunk of my car
before bringing it back inside
and stashing it in the back of my closet

What happens if I get rid of it
and then need something?

I haven’t even gone through
the Xmas decorations yet
