Unfinished (a poem)

Just before midnight…

Unburden me
lighten the load of all lingering doubt
I have no presumption of innocence
with which to bargain
so the stress along the fracture
is that much greater

Unmask the masking sound
connect with the signifying chain
When I let go I lose my place
no longer hearing the siren’s call
no longer knowing where to turn
my voice bleeds into the emptiness

Under the weight of the now after then
night spreads out and pretends
Once I have locked the door
here I am
just me and the night
just made itself at home

I’ve been thinking again
