Zero knots (a poem)

A quiet morning, waiting, and Ruby Throat

There’s some information to be had
the rest is probably lost for good
but for some pictures of a bandstand
and rabbit ears in shadow

I feel uncomfortable sometimes
disinclined to be reckoned with
imagining an explosion
unlikely to occur

as long as I can’t let go
of the rope

Deep in the hull of the boat
a berth waits for its sleeper
the ocean won’t have much to say tonight
if book and lantern have their way

When news is not forthcoming
there’s naught but to lie down and sleep
flowers and forest
have already bedded down for the night

The knot has been loosened
now we drift
