I am the state of the nation (a poem)

Now back to our regularly scheduled fear and loathing.

I am the state of the nation

Depressed and stressed out
wondering where the next check will come from
and when that hammer will fall
or when what we used to call the ‘wheels of industry’
will roll along to crush us all

I am the state of the nation

I need the distraction
from perpetual dissatisfaction
because I’ve got nothing to fall back on
but the cold, hard ground
and streets that haven’t been fixed in too long

I am the state of the nation

Everywhere I am is outrage
we’re all stuck in our own cages
we can barely get ahead
let alone get around
and upward mobility has been replaced
by down

I am the state of the nation

‘Retro’ is in—for a price
You can get whatever you want—for a price
If you just want a slice—well, that’ll cost you, too

I am the state of the nation

The folks we used to fight
are now fuckbuddies of the right
if they can find something else to call it, they will
then insist you are the enemy…

I am the state of the nation

Can’t fall asleep at night
can’t stay awake during the day
nothing I can do will help me
because I can’t pay
so I have to scrounge for whatever scraps I can
and sell the rest

If I’ve got nothing left
what I am I working for?

I am the state of the nation
because I can’t afford to go anywhere else
