A dream I had

It was a dream I had.

I woke up one morning
with the realization
that I had been elected mayor.

I began to wonder
if anybody else knew
so I looked for a paper.

The people around me
simply went about their mornings,
as though I didn’t exist.

I stepped out the door
to greet the gravelly path
that stretched winding into town.

I set about along this path,
the occasional rock at my feet,
and patchy grass along either side.

(I’d like to think I saw an old church in the distance;
it would complete the scene quite nicely.)

I’ll never know where the path really led,
as the dream morphed—
or just ended.
