Here is my Day 23 poem using the napowrimo.net prompt: Write a poem about an animal.
Furtive whispers line the trails through your jungle
the snapping hyenas hide behind boulders
where they can be heard, but never seen
Your markings make you conspicuous
just enough to evade detection
if not suspicion
Everyone questions the obvious
the more obvious it seems
the more questions there are:
Is this real?
Did that actually happen?
The maelstrom that surrounds you
is your camouflage
So when you spread yourself out
in a corner of the killing field
to lick yourself clean after the slaughter
the rest of the jungle
are too distracted to notice
they’re still in danger
